At the Faculty of Education, University of Primorska, in cooperation with the People’s University of Koper, we carried out a professional training focused on how to teach reading using digital tools. The course was held in Koper, on 18th Jan & 1st Feb 2025, and 21st Jun & 3rd Jul 2025. The program, titled "Teaching Reading with Digital Tools", was designed for educators, primary school teachers, Slovenian language teachers, and lecturers of Slovenian as a foreign language for adults.
The training explored the pedagogical processes of integrating digital technology into reading instruction and strengthened participants’ competences in applying digital tools when teaching reading. Its primary goal was to equip educators and teachers to plan and implement reading instruction that meaningfully incorporates digital technologies. Within this framework, the training aimed to:
-highlight the differences between traditional and digital reading processes,
-develop practical skills for using digital technology in teaching reading,
-encourage reflection on approaches to fostering reading literacy and addressing the needs of the 21st century.
Teachers and educators at all levels are facing the challenge of ensuring learning success and providing support to children, pupils, students, and adults as they enter the Slovenian education system and the labour market.
To address this issue, the Slovene institutions - Faculty of Education at the University of Primorska and the People’s University of Koper, in partnership with institutions from Estonia, Latvia, and Ukraine, are developing innovative modules, open-access materials, and an online language course to support reading in a second or foreign language.
The training has showcased how digital technologies, combined with interactive materials, can enrich the process of learning to read. The program presented both theoretical foundations and practical approaches to literacy development, spanning from early childhood education to adult learning. Activities were focused on strengthening literacy, with particular emphasis on reading skills in a second or foreign language and the integration of digital tools into modern teaching practices.
